Accepting accommodation reservations | A location with ski-in/ski-out access to Hakuba Valley Tsugaike Kogen Ski Resort
Resort Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Hakuba Village, Nagano Prefecture) will hold the grand opening of the newly built “Cedars Hotel” on Sunday, February 15, 2026, in the Tsugaike area of Otari Village, Kitaazumi District, Nagano Prefecture.
Cedars Hotel is a newly built accommodation facility located a 1-minute walk from the Tsugaike Kogen Ski Resort gondola lift, allowing for ski-in/ski-out access. Born as the first new hotel in the area in a long time, it provides a stay experience where the natural environment and architectural design harmonize. Furthermore, a cafe in collaboration with the specialty coffee brand “Allpress Espresso” is attached and scheduled to open in mid-February 2026. Details are expected to be released soon. Accommodation reservations are currently being accepted on the official website.
Resort Japan Co., Ltd. Representative Director: Seigo Sasaki “I am truly happy to be able to open Cedars in the wonderful field of Tsugaike. While located in a superb position directly connected to the ski resort, we aimed to create a place where, once inside, one can spend time quietly while overlooking the Northern Alps mountain range without worrying about outside eyes. A place where convenience and private time coexist. The interior of the building combines the expression of concrete that has captured the grain of cedar wood with accents of charred cedar (yakisugi), utilizing the shadows of the materials for a calm and profound finish. We hope you will enjoy a relaxed time in this space where function and design are integrated.”
Cedars Hotel Manager: Sho Fukushima “At Cedars, we value the ability to spend time as if living there, even while at a travel destination. All 16 rooms are equipped with a kitchen and washing machine, creating an environment where guests can stay comfortably not only for short-term stays but also for long-term stays and workations. We hope you will slowly enjoy the beautiful four seasons amidst the grand nature of Hakuba Valley and Tsugaike Kogen.”
The greatest feature of Cedars Hotel’s architecture lies in its “offset structure,” designed by Shinsaku Munemoto of Shinsaku Munemoto & Associates, Architects, where the building’s components are deliberately shifted in their arrangement. This three-dimensional configuration minimizes the line of sight and presence between adjacent guest rooms, achieving a sense of independence and high privacy similar to a detached house, despite being a multi-unit hotel. Additionally, because the view opens in different directions for each guest room, the ridgelines of the beautiful mountains and the expressions of the sky can be captured from multiple angles, allowing guests to enjoy different scenery depending on the time of day and weather.
Furthermore, as the irregularities of the building catch natural light, rich “shadows” are created in the exterior and interior spaces. The contrast between light and shadow that shifts with time brings depth and expression to the space of Cedars Hotel. These elements of “light and shadow” and “shading” are also common to the concrete walls that capture the grain of cedar boards and the material expression of the charred cedar used inside, forming a quiet and impressive expression for an architecture standing in nature.
The hotel name “Cedars” means sugi (cedar) in Japanese. Using the cedar, which is deeply connected to the nature of Nagano, as a symbol, Cedars Hotel actively incorporates cedar wood in its architecture and interior to create a space where the regionality can be felt. Inside the building, cedar from thinned wood and unused materials generated in the region is repurposed and treated with “yakisugi” (charred cedar) processing, which has been used in traditional Japanese architecture since ancient times.
Charred cedar is a unique Japanese technique that increases durability while simultaneously bringing out the expression and warmth of the material itself. This charred cedar material is used primarily in places that people touch, such as the front desk, bookshelves, and parts of the elevator hall, with consideration so that guests can naturally feel the texture and warmth of the cedar.
Additionally, concrete walls using the grain of cedar boards as a mold are adopted in parts of the building. The coexistence of the softness of wood and the inorganic nature of concrete achieves a unique spatial expression that is cool yet reminiscent of the dynamic nature of Nagano.
