March Madness in Hakuba

Absolute head-spinning March Madness this year in Hakuba! Just when we thought the season was over, March swept in and provided the goods for us happy people that stuck around through the whole month. Now that it’s April lets take a moment to reflect on what a special Japow filled March we’ve had.

Late Feb into Early March

Hakuba hosted maybe the most epic snow party the valley has ever seen with Hayden James and the crew playing 4 different shows over 3 days. The snow gods, likely too busy soaking in those sweet party vibes, failed to provide the  powdery goods we grew accustomed to having. This state of affairs carried into early March, and with the temperatures rising it felt like winter had officially ended.

March 5th

After a long string of Bluebirds with a few dreaded days of heavy rains sprinkled in, we were well overdue for a good pounding. The skies delivered on March 5th dumping 15-20 cm mid-mountain and above. This began the epic Month of Japow-filled Madness in Hakuba!

Tues, March 5: We've had a pretty nice rest to winter, at least from mid mountain up, nice snow fell all day yesterday into the night, with 15-20 up around the trees of Tsugiake. Happily take that, was fun riding them to. Today is a bluebird, and with that bit of fresh there will be some fun turns to be made. All resorts are in good shape with top to bottom riding, you'll get freshies up high, good groomers as well, then variable snow through the mid to lower slopes with spring snow down low. Something for everyone today. More snow is in the forecast from tomorrow arvo, more punch in this one with potential for 20-30cm from 1000m up, so pretty good week of riding in store. – Steve Lee @hakubapowdertours #hakubavalley #hakuba #snowboarding #ski #snow #powder

March 7th

While rain fell at the valley level, the resorts got hit hard with 20-30 cm of fresh JAPOW setting us happy frothers up for an incredible few days of spring skiing.

20-30 cm of fresh up top! Thurs, March 7: We've enjoyed several nice days of riding post the last snow and we are now in the middle of the next cycle with rain at valley level up to about mid mountain, then snow turning to nice pow as you go higher. In resort you'll want to poke around the very top of Tsugiake or 47 today, maybe Happo to, but there is some cloud and fog about so the trees will help for vision. Looking at the cams, it is looking pretty good up top, definitely worth going for a slide. Touring prospects are good for the best snow, as the higher you go the better it will be. Expect 20-30cm above resorts, so happy days there. More snow expected through the day with temps dropping and with that the snow line, possible to the valley floor tonight then followed with some nice days. All in all, good spring riding about Hakuba. – Steve Lee @hakubapowdertours

March 8th to March 13th

The temperatures rose and the sun came out. Groomers, Park and the Back Country was the go.

March 13th

And in a matter a days it was again on like Donkey Kong! Temps dropped March 13th and the valley got hit with 15 cm while the resorts reported as much as 50 cm of fresh!

March 17

In the evening of March 17th Hakuba again provided the goods and cleared up for the morning for the most epic of Powder Bluebirds.

March 18th

Bright Sun. Fresh Pow. Great Vibes.

March 22nd to March 24th

Leading up to the 22nd, temps rose and the sunnies stayed on leaving many to think spring had officially sprung. Hakuba had other plans, however, and on the 22nd and 24th we got dumpings from the valley level up extending winter for another week.

March 28th

After 3 dry days, the skies above Hakuba again opened up spraying 10-15 cm up the mountain.

March 30-March 31st

It Absolutely puked on March 30th! Happo One reported as much as 50 cm top the mountain and we observed at least 30-40 which was followed the next day by another 20 cm.

April 1st

No fools here. The first of April provided a Powderful Bluebird and with a few more days of snow in the forecast, the first week of April should be one to remember.
